Worker death toll mounts

Latest Safe Work Australia figures show 151 Australian workers have been killed at work so far this year. Transport postal and warehousing has once again emerged as the most fatal industry, with 57 workplace deaths.

The Agriculture, forestry & fishing industry recorded 41 fatalities – 8 more than the number recorded same time last year.

The construction industry comes third, with 28 fatalities, while Arts & recreation services, with 7 fatalities comes fourth.

Other industries that have seen fatalities in 2017 include Manufacturing (5), Electricity, gas, water & waste services and  Public administration & safety each 3 fatalities.

Others include Mining and Accommodation & food services- each 2 fatalities, Rental, hiring & real estate services, Health care & social assistance and Retail trade 1 fatality each.

Safe Work Australia says these figures are based on initial media reports and are a preliminary estimate of the number of people killed while working.
