Under many standards including the Australian Standard AS4084.1 2023 racking inspections are mandatory. Further to this under both Australian and International legislation racking is defined as “plant” and is therefore subject to civil and criminal legal jurisdictions.

When having your racking inspected you need to ask the following questions:
This is an important question to answer. Independence offers you an unbiased and impartial view of the damage to your racking system. This may not be the case if you utilise the manufacturer or a racking provider. Whilst manufacturers and racking providers talk about ensuring that they want to make sure your racking system is safe their real purpose is to sell more racking. Remember a “proper” racking inspection should not be a quotation for racking repairs but rather a report on the state of the racking system.
There are many brands of racking that are available globally. Indeed within Australia there has been a flood of alternate racking brands within the last five years. A truly independent racking inspection service should be able to test in-house the all racking types within the bounds of both the Australian and International standards. Ask your provider when and where their racking system was tested and to what standard.
In some instances even so called “reputable” racking providers complete racking repairs that are not up to the standard and are considered to be unsafe. Examples can include poorly constructed splices (joins) in uprights and incorrectly installed bracing. When manufacturers are providing this level of service your only defense is an independent and qualified perspective.
